Our Family
This page is under construction. It is designed to tell you about our family and our life philosophy & goals. We will add more details and photos as time allows.
We are a family of 6 (almost 7) living in the foothills of the Unicoi Mountains in South East Tennessee. We desire to be our own company and restore the strong family ties that once existed in this country. This includes learning, living, and working together.
Who we are.
- The Powermeister (a.k.a. Frank). An engineer and world history connoisseur by training. Frank was born and raised in South Korea which gives him a unique perspective into the U.S. social, economic, and governmental system.
- The SolarFarmMom (a.k.a. Kristin). Also an engineer by training, Kristin is a Yankee by birth. After a 10 year career, she’d rather learn how to make everything from scratch (I mean from the basic ingredients grown on our own farm or available locally) and educate her children.
- The Power Boys (a.k.a. Tim & Ashton)
- The Solar Farm Girls (a.k.a. Celia & Mercy)
Homeschooling: Our children are schooled at home by their parents from birth.
- Children are natural learners.
- Learning to learn is our goal.
- Formal “sit down” schooling should wait until the individual child is mature in all areas (sight, hearing, verbal, physical, mental capacities) in order to provide the most effective learning.
- We focus on the 3Rs: reading (by reading), writing (by writing), arithmetic (by living & doing).
- Our long term plan is to implement the Robinson Curriculum to further enable self learning. This curriculum uses real, high quality, classical literature (a.k.a. Living Books) to teach reading, grammar, writing skill, science, and history. The Robinson’s recommend the Saxon Math series. We are currently evaluating this for our own use as well as a number of other math programs.
- We desire our children to learn real life skills including engineering, agriculture, traditional nutrition, and business management.
- We desire our children to come to a genuine saving faith in Christ. The Lord & the KJV Bible is our guide.
Family Business: Our goal is to create an inheritance for our children based on true wealth by creating and manufacturing products from raw materials.
- We currently operate Knot4Fun, a business designed to teach kids the ancient art of knot tying so they might live fuller, funner, more fruitful lives.
- We operate a small family farm. Occasionally we have extra for sale but our main goal is to produce the majority of our own food.
- We also operate Cherohala Chairs, a business that manufactures high quality wood furniture for home and yard from locally available materials.
